Heat Powered Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps

Market Opportunities include solar air conditioners, data center cooling, waste heat from industrial and commercial processes, truck and bus cooling, ultra high efficiency gas furnaces, geothermal heat pumps, and absolute-zero buildings.

 

Solar Thermal Powered Air Conditioners

Opportunity: Thermal Solar Collectors installed to provide space heating during cold months supply excess heat during warm months that is currently not used.

PDM Solar's THERMAL TRANSFORMER™ technology will enable the development of cost effective solar thermal powered air conditioners for buildings ranging in size from residential to large industrial.

Data Centers

Opportunity: Computer Data Centers produce large amounts of heat that currently often must be removed by electric powered chillers.

PDM Solar's THERMAL TRANSFORMER™ technology, in conjunction with liquid cooling technology being developed by a research partner, will allow heat to be removed from data centers to power air conditioning for other parts of the facility.

Waste Heat from Industrial or Commercial Processes

Opportunity: Industrial and Commercial processes produce large amounts of heat, which currently is unused because of the low recovery temperature.

PDM Solar's THERMAL TRANSFORMER™ technology will enable the development of chiller products which can be powered from waste heat streams below 180°F.

Trucks and Buses

Opportunity: Truck and Bus Engines produce waste heat from the engine cooling system and exhaust.

PDM Solar's THERMAL TRANSFORMER™ technology will enable the development of chillers to cool bus occupants or refrigerated trailer contents, minimizing the fuel that is currently used to power the chiller or air conditioning compressors.

Ultra High Efficiency Natural Gas and Propane Furnaces

Opportunity: Burning Natural gas and Propane provides the ability to generate high temperature heat. Using this heat at low temperatures for space heating is inefficient and wastes much of its value.

PDM Solar's THERMAL TRANSFORMER™ technology will enable the development of ultra high efficiency natural gas and propane furnaces. The heat from the gas combustion will power the heat engine and will eventually be recovered from the heat engine condenser and used to provide space heating. The work produced by the heat engine will power the heat pump compressor/expander, which will extract heat from the ground or air to provide additional space heating.

GeoThermal Heat Pumps

Opportunity: Conventional Geothermal Heat Pumps use electricity to drive the refrigerant compressor. Much of the heat from the fossil fuel typically used to generate the electricity is dumped into the environment as waste heat by the power plant's cooling towers.

PDM Solar's THERMAL TRANSFORMER™ technology will enable the development of vapor compression heat pumps where, on the coldest days, both the refrigerant compressor power and the heat for space heating comes from the ground heat.
